November 2025: Thanks to a new bill sponsored by County Council Chair Edward Burroughs III, the ban has ended.
"This legislation not only prevents the inhumane euthanasia of countless dogs who pose no threat but also makes our communities safer by strengthening protections for residents against genuinely dangerous dogs,” said Burroughs.

May 2025: The Hiawatha City Commission Monday evening on a 3-2 vote approved a motion to remove the ban on pit bulls and rottweilers in the city, and move forward with a stricter vicious dog ordinance.

March, 2025: El Dorado, Kansas repealed its 36-year-old BSL banning "pit bulls" through a majority city council vote, wth reports of the repeal emerging around April 2025. The ban, which had been in place since 1987, was removed in favor of breed-neutral public safety policies.

March 2025: The city adopted the animal control ordinance on its third reading. The ordinance was amended after discussion at the last council meeting earlier this month to remove the requirement for city residents to purchase a license and tag from the city for dogs and cats. Those pets however will be required to have some sort of an ID tag affixed to their collar with the owner’s name and telephone number.
The ordinance removes the ban on Pit Bull Terriers and replaces it with a vicious dog rule that leaves the decision up to the Animal Control Officer of what constitutes a vicious dog.

Repealed by popular vote!
November 2024: After nearly 2 decades, Aurora residents have voted to repeal the city's controversial pit bull ban.
Aurora, Colorado has finally lifted its long-standing ban on pit bulls. This decision, made by voters in November 2024, marks the end of a contentious debate that has raged since the ban was first implemented since 2005.

March 2024: After many years, Clay Center has officially repealed the Pitbull ban. Previously, pits were not allowed within city limits, meaning CCARE couldn’t adopt any pits out to families in Clay Center.
“The largest change since the repeal is that CCARE can now assist Pitbulls and families of Pitbulls in our community much more efficiently,” John Rieb Jr., shelter manager of CCARE, shared. He went on to explain that CCARE can now adopt Pitbulls locally, meaning adopters have more choices on what dog they can choose to adopt.

March 2024: The Kearney Board of Aldermen repealed the Pit Bull Ordinance by a split vote on Monday, March 18. The city of Kearney was one of the last communities in the northland to have a ban on pit bulls.
After years of trying to get the city’s pit bull ordinances (1050-2006 and 1078-2007) repealed, Aldemen finally finished the job. The pit bull ordinance had two parts from the early 2000’s and both were repealed and removed from the municipal code.

February 2024: Kamsack council is changing its animal control bylaw so that it is less breed-specific.
Before, the bylaw banned pit bull terriers, American pit bull terriers, pit bulls, or any other dog that is a mixture of one of those breeds. Mayor Nancy Brunt told the Kamsack Times Jan. 26 the bylaw has been updated to ban aggressive animals in general rather than specific breeds.
“That is to eliminate the ‘breed-specific’ in there and, change it to an aggressive animal,” she said. “Any animal can be aggressive. It is not very specific. A pit bull can be the most loving dog around and a Chihuahua can chew your ankle off. So regarding it being specific, most municipalities have changed that.”

October 2023: The Louisville City Council voted unanimously this week to repeal the prohibition of pit bulls in the city.
City Clerk Meredyth Muth said repealing the prohibition on pit bulls does not affect the rest of city code regulating animals. Any vicious animals will still be subject to city code enforcement.
